I came to Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Delhi from previous stint with Kendriya Vidyalaya Port Blair after Kendriya Vidyalaya RK Puram Sector 4 declined the availability of seat for us .. me and my younger brother Ajay Sharma.. It was in the middle of the session September to be precise..

Shri AK Ray was the Prinicipal and I was admitted to Ninth Standard, that was the highest class of this new branch or not so old a KV.. Shri Keshav Dev Pandey our Hindi Teacher was also our class Teacher for all the three years from 1973 top 1976 till we became the first batch of KV IIT Hauz Khas New Delhi 110029 ( I tyhink the pin code was different from Hauz Khas which had PIN of 110016 )

Pandey Sir, in his first interaction in the classroom announced – ‘ Abhaya Sharma, Khade Ho Jao .. ‘

Sheepishly I stood up from my desk, little perplexed as to what was my fault.. Pandey Sir quickly added his another statement in his buland awaaz – ‘ Kavita Bhi Likhte ho .. ‘

Again not knowing what to say .. I said .. “Nahi Sir.. ” waiting what would be the next question hurled at me..

This time Pandey Sir said ‘ Likhte nahi ho to Chhap Kaise Gai.. ‘ and presented me a copy of Orange Colored Hindi Patrika .. published by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan .. it had included a poem written by me called Tulsi Mahima .. of which I know almost nothing as I lost the magazine a few years after I came to Mumbai.. it is OK …

There is another incidence .. when our Higher Secondary results were declared and we all had gathered to see the same at our notice board, Pandey Sir instaed of congratulating rather mentioned to me .. ‘ Sab Kiye Karaye pe Pani Pher Diya.. Hum to tumhen isliye number nahi dete the ki kahin tum sar pe na chadh jao .. We were expecting a distinction in Hindi from you .. sab gud gobar kar diya .. ”

Our batch of KV IIT Delhi, was the first to appear in AIHS board exam .. Vipin Sachdev had topped expectedly but few would have thought that I would be among the top ten students.. I think with 507 marks out of 750 (some 67.6 percent ) I was probably placed seventh in the class of 29 .. There were as many as 22 First divisions.. it seems two friends had got supplementary but overall the result was absolutely amazing ..

I had obtained 128 out of 150 in Mathematics .. I remember when we cam to school after our matchs exam I had mentioned to our Maths teacher ID Sharma .. ‘ Sir, I might just miss the distinction by one or two marks evaluating myself to get around 110 .. ‘ Sharma Sir had put his hand around my shoulder.. and said happily.. ‘Chinta na kar kake .. teri Distinction aa jani Hai .. ‘ .. he was indeed right..

So much for the past .. at present let me tell you that I may not have done enough justice to my poerformance in school and did not really do as well in graduation and post graduation in Chemistry from Delhi University enrolled as a student at Hindu College.. still I landed up at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for one year Training School to be trained as a nuclear scientist.. one of the 23 people selected from all over India for Chemistry stream.. though selected with 15 minute interview I again miffed my opportunities .. and could not prove to be a good scientist.. maybe I was influenced by the comapny I kept in the initial phase.. but not to balme anyone but myself .. I remember ‘ Bura Jo. dekhan main Chala Bura Na miliya Koi.. Jo dil Khoja aapna mujhse bura na Koi .. ‘

I have had few interactions with my batchmates from KV 1976 after leaving school.. myself Ajay Yadav and Lalit Mohan Chaudhary were part of NCC (Air wing) at Safdarjung Airport for our first year in college, Rajeev Bhandari and Hemlata took admission to Hindu College.. Rajeev Later migrated to BITS Pilani .. Ashwini was across the road at St. Stephens it seems Atul and Lalit Mohan had entered Ramjas and Brijender at Kirori Mal College.. Vipin had got selected at NDA but he returned from there and earlier Gurpreet had qualified for NDA during school days itself.. it seems later Vipin came to Delhi College of Engineering and from there to Marine Engineering College at Calcutta.. Atul had joined Merchant Navy .. Lata was probably at Lady Shriram or Gargi College, Deepak took admission in Deshbandhu along with Kripa Shankar Ajay Yadav had joined ARSD and it seems V Srinivas had gone to Pune with his uncle and studied at Ferguson College .. Suman Taneja I believe was part of Miranda House .. Sanjay Mathur had joined Sri Ram College of Commerce Sanjiv ad qualified for IIT BHU (only one to clear IIT) .. it seems Hitesh had also got into Delhi College of Engineering Ajai Kansal went to BITS Pilani .. I have little or no information about Reena Rita Ranjana and Kaushal Gupta (Ranjana Mehta is not in the picture or maybe it was Madhulika Saxena who was among the seven girls in our batch, I am not very sure who among Madhulika and Ranjana was not there. in final )

So much for this occasion of a get together organised by 1983 batch.. though I did not know any of them from school days they were three years junior top my younger brother Ajay Sharma who passed out in 1980

I have had an opportunity to know and meet Deepinder Pal Singh and Sanjay Goel from the 1983 batch in Mumbai .. though I later knew many more from their batch. at facebook group by Deepinder..

Vipin Maira, Kumud Bhandari (nee Varma) and Nandini Menon and Sunil Bhaskar from KV 1977 batch are good friends besides having known lot of them from Facebook.. esp. Pankaj Goel, Sunil Goyal, Sunil Mathur Sanjiv Malhan Sanjiv Prassar and even Sanjiv Ahuja and Jasbir Kaur ( Now Jagjit Kaur)

Have a great time all of you who have gathered to celebrate this alumni meet.. I wish I could join.. in fact I would love to join you next year when the first batch of KV IIT would be celebrating its Golden Jubilee..

My sincere thanks to all the teachers who are still with us including Pandey Sir, Savita Kapoor madam and Ujagar Singh Sir ..

  • Vishesh Jaimala Episode – 1

Today on November 11 of 2025 I haveis just initiated this series at whatsapp and maybe alkso extend to Facebook .. I must say that Radio especially Vividh Bharti and Radio Ceylon are responsible for breeding a deep love for Hindi old songs in me and I believe multitude of Hindi Cinema lovers..

Ajit Wadekar was known to me even as a school kid in Agra .. I think I also knew Bedi Chandra and Prasanna and Dilip Sardesai then .. In Port Blair love for Cricket really peaked for me .. we used to have Cricket Book matches in school with almost full teams participating and score book maintained..

Cricket and Cinema were seemingly my first passions in life till I developed much interest in joining and serving for Army ( Navy and Air Force were included when one said so) .. Maybe Interest in Cricket was seeded by my eldest brother Prabodh Sharma and also Alok Sharma both were primarily Hockey players though..

The songs included by Ajit Wadekar in his Vishesh Jaimala are listed below
